Keep Calm and Count Every Vote

I remember earlier this spring, getting ready for one of our first big volunteer events. We originally planned to do an in-person kickoff but had to cancel due to COVID-19. This meant suddenly changing everything. When I’d usually be heading to rallies or meetings across the country, I instead found myself at home with my wife and children writing letters to voters. We faced a new reality, but we adjusted.

Now, as I write this, the seven states that will decide the presidential race are still too close to call. And that’s OK. This election, voters turned out in record numbers to have our voices heard, and I have been so inspired by that.

In an election as close as this one (which, frankly, is a lot closer than it should have been), one thing really stands out to me: All of our collective hard work — the intense and unprecedented voter engagement of hundreds of organizations across the country — has been essential. I’m grateful for Sierra Club members’ contribution to that effort. Our 1.3 million letters, 5.5 million phone calls, and 20 million text messages show determination and resolve. The power of the Sierra Club is in our communities, members and volunteers — it’s in building with our neighbors to safeguard the health, safety and sustainability of our planet, and demanding a democracy that includes all of us.

Of course, to no one’s surprise, Donald Trump is more interested in denying reality than adjusting to it. Whether it’s COVID-19, climate change, or democracy, he won’t accept facts that are a threat to his power. He is already attempting to steal this election by falsely claiming a victory he hasn’t earned. We won’t let that happen. From the beginning, we’ve been determined and resolute, and that’s not going to change in the final stretch. We will count every vote. We will protect the results. And we will remember that when we organize and fight back, we win.
